Hatch Grand Canyon River Expedition

Hatch River Expeditions allowed me and one other young photographer from NAU to document a 7-day motorized boat trip down the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon as a digital media marketing intern. We experienced intense rapids, beautiful hikes, ancient ruins, multiple waterfalls, and fun swimming spots each day. I challenged myself to get a variety of angles in this intense environment not well-suited for camera gear. I would do things like stand on the boat during river rapids with my camera in hand rather than holding on and climbing up boulders to get new vantage points. My goal was to record a well-rounded visual story of what this trip was like, such as camp life, daily activities, the rapids, and the diversity of the guests. I knew the sense of wonder and excitement from everyone on the trip – as well as the vast landscapes we were traveling through – needed to be the heart of this series of images.
